Oh, to B12 Again.
No, not the age, the vitamin. Turns out, B12 is the unsung hero of brain function. And without it, you could be looking at memory loss, brain fog, maybe even an early trip down the dementia highway. A new study in the Annals of Neurology suggests that even if your B12 levels fall within the so-called “normal” range, you might still be running the risk of decline.
And get this: older adults on the lower end of normal actually showed signs of neurological damage like shrinking brain volume and sluggish nerve function. Apparently B12 is essential for myelin, the protective insulation around your nerves that keeps your brain firing on all cylinders.
The fix? Eat like your grandparents did before everything got processed to hell. Red meat, fish, poultry, eggs. If you’re vegetarian, load up on fortified foods, nutritional yeast, tempeh. So go ahead, B12 again — without having to go through all that puberty ickiness.
