Stay Healthy. Do “The Flamingo.”
Okay, I made up the name “The Flamingo” but it should be called that because it’s descriptive of what it is: the One-Leg Balance Test. Basically, it’s the length of time you can stand on one leg. Why is this important? Because it might indicate how fast you’re aging at the neuromuscular level. A recent Mayo Clinic study compared volunteers in their 50s with those who were 20 years older. People in their mid 50s averaged 17 seconds on their nondominant leg. The average was 11 seconds for those in their mid 70s. That decline matters—poor single-leg balance is linked to falls and even premature death. The article also dives deep into the vestibular system, loud noise, and a bunch of other cool stuff. So do “The Flamingo.” And stay in the pink.
